Anthom
A gigantic canvas for a couple in Chicago, IL. I was commissioned to create a painting (measuring at least 4 ft. x 7 ft.) to adorn the entrance of their music studio. The central figure is a Plastormian Firebird, unfurling wings that serve as a reminder and call-to-arms; their... Anthom. The right wing holds a scepter made of a ruler fused with a Zildjian drumstick. The left, the couple's marriage date; a "sequence start" of the vital interplay necessary for the constant evolution of love. *Features interchangeable tiles that mark/celebrate the wife's stated goal to run a marathon in every state ("24 states down so far!"). Read more about the entire progress of the piece (from blank canvas to finish) HERE.

[but] I'm Here To Help!
America's current/confusing state of international diplomacy and war. This piece is the inevitable byproduct of my love of political talk radio, which is played more often than music in my studio.

Better Living Through Cirkitry
Spending the last few months converting my studio to solar power has led me to a new phase/fascination in my painting workflow. I've become enamored with circuitry, electricity, and of the wondrous advent of open-source electronics and micro-controllers. This piece is my first, tiny, baby step into the integration of those worlds. It marks my first use of electric paint -- something you'll see a lot more of. My head is already spinning with grand ideas for future projects. But for now, something very, very simple. This painting is Step.1.0 into that larger world. It features a removable battery clip lined with electric paint that activates the LED light at the top.

Home is where the Heart fizzed™
As an artist who’s governed solely by instinct, I just “know” when a painting is complete. That guttural certitude can sometimes find itself in cognitive dissonance with the more logic-centered hemispheres of my brain. Home is where the heart fizzed is one of those pieces. It was created under an avalanche of emotions. By the time that tempest subsided, I realized that the canvas had preserved that unrestrained catharsis perfectly. The storm that produced this piece ended up being just what the “doctor" ordered. It allowed me to disburden all of those frenzied thoughts and maudlin emotions. While I don’t normally leave pieces so raw, that aforementioned “gut” knew it was finished — long before I understood the actual logic behind it; and that even the slightest revision could bring down the entire structure. Reason #4404.4 why I fucking love this medium.

Now is Not the Time For Making Enemies
The accounts of Voltaire's deathbed have been numerous and varying, and it has not been possible to establish the details of what precisely occurred. His enemies related that he repented and accepted the last rites given by a Catholic priest, or that he died under great torment, while his adherents told how he was defiant to his last breath. According to one story, his last words were, "Now is not the time for making new enemies." It was his response to a priest at the side of his deathbed, asking Voltaire to renounce Satan.

••• Progress Note (FINAL) •••
Summer'14 studio revisions are now (at long last) COMPLETE! My studio is now fully insulated and powered by solar. And now (finally) it's time to get back to work!!
••• Progress Note (05-19-14) •••
Now onto the interior! At this point, I'm exhausted. These renovations are taking so much more time than I originally planned on. I'm eager to get back to work. But in the end, it'll all be worth it. Especially for the fact that winters will be so much more tolerable!
••• Progress Note (05-12-14) •••
After weeks of building, cussing, and countless trips to Home Depot, I am finally done with the exterior portion of my studio's renewable energy retrofit! All four solar panels are now online and producing an incredible amount of energy -- even on cloudy days! My homemade panel is also working (amazingly enough) and produces a steady stream of heat using natural convection. I have one last (major) task to complete before getting back to art.
••• Progress Note (05-02-14) •••
At this point, I'm about half-done with my studio upgrade projects. But because I'm a guy who gets easily carried away with things, that project list continues to evolve. Not content with just buying solar panels — I foolishly embarked on a plan to BUILD MY OWN PANELS. And that plan has required more hours than I originally planned on! But once I get the wiring run and the fundamentals of voltage worked out — you’ll know where to run during the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse...
